WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE BECOME OUR S.E.L.F.?
The beauty that happens when we create a relationship with S.E.L.F.
is that, in any given situation, we now see the opportunity to flip into the P.O.V.
of a calmer, wiser, more gregarious, compassionate, and light-hearted version of us.
When we ask,
“How would I think, feel, act and react if I were a better version of me?”
that question alone, goes a long way.
But I’ve found, that what’s even more powerful, natural and effective,
is to create a vivid, beauty full, detailed version of our S.E.L.F.
– really paint a picture of her – by asking,
“How does she move, look, speak, think, act…”
I can tell you my S.E.L.F. moves better, breathes better, feels better, speaks better,
gives and receives better, lives better and beams better.
And all it takes for me to become her, in any given moment,
is to choose to do it and to believe in the outcome.
Does it feel impossible to choose her sometimes?
Definitely.
But here’s the beauty full thing about our mind:
All you have to do it repeat something enough times and it becomes a habit.
So the more I choose to embody my S.E.L.F’s better version, the easier it becomes to do it.
And the more I choose her in casual, low-stakes moments,
the more it trains me choose her in higher-stakes moments.
The first habit to build is simply to begin asking,
“What would my S.E.L.F. do?”
Can we always get over what’s triggering us in any given moment?
No. But at least we can ask and that, alone, is a win.
And every single time we do manage to embody our S.E.L.F, that’s an even bigger win!
As for me, every single time I do it,
I consciously celebrate my decision and it makes me feel amazing!
That’s when life becomes a S.E.L.F APPRECIATION GAME!
Here’s a low-stakes example from today:
I had planned a trip (about an hour and a half away) to pick up some special cat food that my cat needs for his new elimination diet. He’s been on it just over a week and I was running low on the food because I was waiting for an answer from the vet before ordering more.
When I got my answer, it was too late to order it, so the only way was to go pick it up.
Since they’re only open from Noon to 3pm, Brett couldn’t drive there.
I wake up to a snow storm.
Snow + unexpected bus detours + terrible traffic
means that the extra time I had alotted isn’t enough.
I try to call the place.
Voice mail.
My phone (which is Brett’s old phone that I’m temporarily using since mine broke)
has suddenly started loosing its charge alarmingly quickly and, after many more failed calls,
I can’t phone anymore.
Stress starts to mount.
Thoughts start to swirl:
“It’s taken so long to get my cat on this diet and if he has even a bite of anything else,
we have to start from day 1 again!”
“This bus ride, that is now over 2.5 hours 1-way, may all be for nothing!”
“I’ll have to do it all again on Monday and I don’t even have the time!”
etc. etc. etc.
Then, I remember to ask:
“What would my S.E.L.F. do?”
She lifts her chest and feels her spine floating.
She raises her eye line.
She smiles.
She imagines, as vividly as she can, the scene of walking in, picking up the food, and saying to the person, “I’m so thrilled you’re still here! Thank you so much!”
I sat on that bus for over an hour and a half deeply immersed in this beauty full scenario,
and, as I did, I knew that the day was already a big win. Even if I didn’t get the food,
I gave myself the gift of chosing to spend this bus ride in a state of positivity
instead of letting 1.5 hours of my life tick by in a state of depreciation.
That was the win.
Another succesful round of the S.E.L.F APPRECIATION GAME!
Getting my food was just a bonus.
I knew I would get it because deep simulation does alter outcomes.

As I said, this was a low-stakes example.
When I try to access my S.E.L.F in the pursuit of my own important life goals,
it can be much more challenging, but
EVERY DAY, I’M GETTING BETTTER AT BEING MY S.E.L.F!
Especially when I use tools (like queening, simulation, and multi-sensory activation).
