WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LEARN FROM OUR SELVES.?
I have great news!
You know those things in our lives that we do quite effortlessly and easily?
We all have them.
Things that others may struggle with but, for us, they just flow.
These are actually invaluable tools that can help us achieve the goals that feel more challenging.
Years ago, I did a life-changing 3-day workshop with one of the originators of NLP.
She taught us that, when working towards a challenging goal,
we can use the physical and mental markers that accompany our effortless abilities
and then program them onto a challenging goal.
In this one weekend, I shifted my years-long writers block
and became able to write as many songs as I desired.
What did I use as my efforltess ability?
Cutting hair!!
I was never trained, but (as my mom will attest) I’ve been cutting hair
from the time I could hold a scissors.
My models were my Barbies!
I would transform their long hair into Farrah Fawcett layers.
Then a cute, mid-length cut.
Then a stylish bob.
Then a pixie cut.
Then complete baldness.
I don’t think I was in the habit of showing my mother these different incarnations of hairdos,
so I’m assuming she just thought her daughter had a strange predilection for bald dolls.
I remember her gentle voice saying,
“Sweetie, you know their hair won’t grow back, right?”
Of course, knew. I just loved cutting hair,
and I wanted to keep cutting ’til there was nothing left!
Later, when a hairdresser refused to give me bangs because of my short forehead, I did it myself.
Then, one day, I heard one of my friends mentioning that he needed a haircut.
“I’ll do it! I said.
I remember being nervous, but not nervous enough to back down.
One voice was saying, “You’ve never cut a boy’s hair! You don’t know boy styles!”
The other was saying, “Don’t worry, you’ve got this. You’ll figure it out. You always do.”
And I did.
I chose hair-cutting as my effortless model because, when I did it,
even though many times I was afraid of going wrong,
a bigger part of me had total trust in my ability to get the job done.
I was never even sure how I knew what to do,
I just knew that something in me knew, and that it would always work out.
And it always did.
WHAT’S YOUR EFFORTLESS ABILITY?
COOKING? BAKING? GARDENING? GIVING ADVICE? INTERIOR DESIGN? VENTRILOQUISM?
SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR PROFESSION? FLYING TRAPEZE?
IT CAN BE ANYTHING. AS LONG AS IT’S SOMETHING THAT:
1) YOU ENJOY
2) YOU FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT
3) EVEN WHEN AN OBSTACLE OCCURS, YOU TRUST IN YOUR ABILITY TO FIND AN ANSWER.
1) WRITE DOWN YOUR CHOICE IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.
2) CHOOSE AN IMAGE, FROM THE GALLERIES BELOW, TO REPRESENT YOUR CONFIDENT ABILITY.
*It should NOT be one of the images you chose yesterday.
